Mizuki Hirai developed a love for swimming at the age of three when she attended a parent-child swimming class at a local pool. She first competed in a national competition in the third grade of elementary school. In 2019, as a first-year junior high school student, she won the 50m butterfly at the National Junior Olympics with a new tournament record. After graduating from junior high school, she moved with her family to Kanagawa Prefecture for further growth. She attended Nihon University Fujisawa High School and trained at Arena Tsukimino SC.

During her high school years, Hirai made significant progress, winning medals at the World Junior Championships. At the Paris Olympic selection trials, she defeated Rikako Ikee to win and was selected for the Japan national team.

At the Paris Olympics, she competed in three events: the 100m butterfly, women’s 400m medley relay, and mixed 400m medley relay, advancing to the finals in all events (7th in the 100m butterfly, 5th in the women’s 400m medley relay, and 8th in the mixed 400m medley relay).

After graduating from high school, Mizuki Hirai announced her intention to attend the University of Tennessee in the United States. She aims to set world records and perform well at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
